January 2023
Royal Mail temporarily unable to send international mail and parcels
On 11/01/2023 Royal Mail announced that a “cyber incident” had caused a severe disruption to the computerised systems used to process international letters and parcels. Royal Mail sends around 152 million parcels abroad each year, but is temporarily unable to despatch any items to overseas destinations.
All Royal Mail customers, including businesses using franking machines have been “strongly recommended to temporarily hold any export mail” while they [Royal Mail] work to resolve the issue.
Items already dispatched/in the system, may be subject to delays.
There are minor delays to post coming into the UK, but domestic deliveries are unaffected. Letters and parcels being sent to Northern Ireland, Jersey, Guernsey, and Isle of Man are also unaffected.
Thursday 19th January update
Following the “cyber incident” announcement and subsequent suspension of international mail and parcels, the Royal Mail are now starting to move limited volumes of export parcels. Initially they are only processing mail that is already in the system, and Royal Mail are continuing to ask customers NOT to submit any new export parcels into the network.
For customers sending letters to international destinations (which do not require a customs declaration) there is some good news. Today (19/01/2023), customers sending letters to all international destinations can start sending mail into the Royal Mail network again through all channels. This includes customers using franking machines and Post Office branches.
Royal Mail have apologised for the disruption caused and are working to resolve the issue. We will endeavour to keep our customers and this page updated as soon as we are given more information
If you are a franking customer and have any questions regarding the above, please contact our dedicated team by emailing frankingteam@mymailingroom.com.

Important changes for franking machine customers
Removal of standard franking machines
This April you will receive a letter from Royal Mail regarding the removal of the traditional franking machine crown die indicia. Since 2014, Mailmark franking machines (printing the machine readable 2D barcode) have allowed the Royal Mail to process letter post far more efficiently and will now be the only offering for franking machine customers.
If your franking machine already prints a 2D barcode (and connects to the internet) then you don’t need to do anything. If your franking machine is still printing an indicia, then you will need to switch to Mailmark in order for your post to be processed and delivered.
For more information, or if you are unsure if you are affected then please contact us on 01322 288890 or use the form above.
